There was a time in history when a fireplace was basically the center of the home. It was the home’s source of heat and the means of cooking. The hearth was the center of hospitality. As homes grew in size, as the number of rooms increased, so the need for a fireplace in each room became necessary. The addition of central heating to our homes reduced the place of the fireplace in a home often to recreational. The room used for gathering the family and friends often had a fireplace that could be lighted if the mood dictated such, or as an alternative, means of heating, in an emergency.
